The challenge
Cruise ships are floating high-density occupancies with complex HVAC architecture and shared water systems — an environment that has historically been a vector for norovirus, Legionnaires' disease (Legionella pneumophila) and other airborne and waterborne pathogens. In January 2024 a single voyage of Cunard's Queen Victoria reported 129 passengers and 25 crew with norovirus symptoms.
The structural issue is well-documented: HVAC systems consume up to 40 % of total hotel load on cruise ships, and dining areas with elevated CO₂ are linked to higher airborne-transmission risk. Building-side filtration alone — even when meticulously maintained — leaves the bulk of crew and guest space under-filtered for sub-micron pathogens.
