TROTEC MD200 – Magnetometer for Locating Ferromagnetic Metals (up to 3 m deep)
Available to order: typical lead time 5–10 working days. We confirm the exact date after your order or enquiry.
The TROTEC MD200 is an easy-to-use magnetometer for locating covered ferromagnetic metals such as valve caps and rods, hydrants, metal manhole and tank covers, and marker nails or magnets hidden under soil, road surfaces, snow or water. It locates ferromagnetic objects up to 3 m deep (depending on the size of the object) and shows the signal on a backlit display as a number and bar graph, with an audible tone that rises with signal strength. Non-magnetic metals such as aluminium cans or crown caps are not detected. With a waterproof carbon-fibre probe rod, robust ABS housing, an operating range of -20 °C to +50 °C and a weight of only 0.83 kg including batteries, it is built for water and gas supply networks in all weather.
How it works
The MD200 reacts with high sensitivity to the smallest changes in the earth's magnetic field caused by ferromagnetic objects in the ground. The sensors in the probe rod measure the earth's magnetic field continuously; a buried ferromagnetic object deflects the field lines, which the device registers as a rising signal. As you approach an object, the signal increase is shown visually and acoustically; with larger objects such as manhole covers, the maximum values occur at the object edges, and the exact position is found by swinging the magnetometer and comparing the signal.
The device is ready for use a few seconds after switching on. Sensitivity can be set manually or automatically, and volume, display backlight and 180° display rotation can be adjusted via the dirt- and water-resistant membrane keypad. An erase (calibration) function suppresses a ferromagnetic background signal so that only stronger signals are indicated. In addition, the device gives an alarm signal when approaching live cables; according to the operating manual this function is intended for orientation only.
Key benefits
- Locates up to 3 m deep — fast detection of covered ferromagnetic metals, depending on the size of the object.
- Reliable results — beverage cans (aluminium), crown caps and other non-magnetic metal objects are not detected.
- Adjustable sensitivity — high sensitivity, adjustable manually or automatically.
- Dual field strength indication — visual (number and bar graph) and acoustic, with maximum value display of the magnetic signal.
- More than 24 hours of continuous operation — on 4 x AA batteries, with battery status indicator.
- Built for harsh conditions — robust, ergonomic ABS housing, waterproof carbon-fibre probe rod and dirt- and water-resistant membrane keys.
- Light construction — only 830 g including batteries for fatigue-free searching.
- Easy to read — backlit display with rotation function.
Typical applications
- Locating covered valve caps and valve rods in water and gas supply networks
- Finding hydrants and metal manhole and tank covers
- Locating survey marker nails or marker magnets
- Searches under soil, road surfaces, snow or water
Operating conditions and installation
- Operating temperature: -20 °C to +50 °C
- Power supply: 4 x 1.5 V AA (LR6) batteries; operating time approx. 24 h
- Protection: housing (excluding battery compartment) IP64; probe rod IP68
- Use: remove magnetic objects you carry (for example safety boots with steel caps) and keep mobile phones away, as they can influence the measurement; never use the probe rod for digging (operating manual).

Frequently asked questions
Which objects can the MD200 find?
Only ferromagnetic metals, for example valve caps and rods, hydrants, metal manhole and tank covers, and marker nails or magnets. Aluminium cans, crown caps and other non-magnetic metals are not detected; a magnet can be used to check whether an object is ferromagnetic.
How deep can the MD200 detect?
Up to 3 m, depending on the size of the object. Larger objects and objects closer to the surface produce a stronger signal.
What power supply does it use?
Four AA (LR6) 1.5 V batteries, which are included according to the operating manual, for more than 24 hours of continuous operation.
Can I use the MD200 in rain or snow?
Yes. The manufacturer designed it for use in heat, cold, rain and snow; the probe rod is rated IP68 and the housing IP64 (excluding the battery compartment).
Does the MD200 detect live cables?
It gives an alarm signal when approaching live cables with 50/60 Hz. The operating manual points out that the device is not specifically designed for locating live wires, so this indication is for orientation only.
