The TROTEC PD200 is a professional impulse current measuring system for locating earthed leaks in non-conductive membranes, for example on foil and bitumen flat roofs. The set combines the PD200 G impulse generator, built into a transport case with carrying handle, with the battery-powered PD200 E impulse receiver and all standard accessories, including a 200 m ring line. It runs on 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz, weighs 8.5 kg complete with standard accessories and has protection class IP54. Its compact dimensions allow it to be carried up to the roof, for example via safety ladders.

How it works

The method requires water on and below the waterproofing layer: the moisture conducts the electrical current, so the membrane being tested must be wet enough (if necessary, it is watered beforehand). An uninsulated ring line is laid in a closed loop around the area to be tested, at least 0.5 m from the roof edge and in direct contact with the waterproofing. According to the operating manual, the generator emits current pulses at a voltage of 40 V; the current finds its way through the moisture to the leak. With the two measuring rods, the receiver measures the potential difference, and its pointer deflects towards the higher potential, guiding you step by step to the point where moisture penetrates.

Clearly visible signal lamps on top of the case, protected by a sturdy steel bracket, show the status: the green lamp lights up when a pulse is delivered to the ring line, the red lamp when there is a short circuit. An integrated buzzer can be switched on to add an audible signal. In the event of a short circuit, the output signal is switched off automatically and an alarm sounds; an integrated short-circuit test is part of the equipment.

Key benefits

  • Non-destructive leak location — pinpoint location of leaks in foil and bitumen roofs and other flat waterproofing without opening the roof.
  • Works under ballast — leak location is also possible on flat roofs with ballast such as gravel, green roofs or paving slabs.
  • Finds capillary leaks — also detects capillary leaks that cannot be found with the smoke gas method.
  • Visible and audible signals — green pulse lamp and red short-circuit lamp, visible from almost any angle across the roof, plus a switchable signal tone.
  • Short-circuit protection — integrated short-circuit test, automatic shut-off of the output signal and alarm signal in the event of a short circuit.
  • Complete, compact set — all necessary accessories in one compact case; robust, splash-proof design.
  • Simple receiver — compact, battery-powered receiver with carrying strap and a minimum of controls.

Typical applications

  • Warm roofs, cold roofs and green flat roofs
  • Roof terraces and balconies
  • Foil-lined ponds and swimming pools
  • Foil-lined landfills and heaps
  • Leak testing of hall floor sealing for LAU and HBV facilities (German Water Resources Act, WHG)

Operating conditions and installation

Mains connection 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz; the mains connection must have a proper protective earth conductor. The receiver runs on 6 batteries type LR06 / AM-3 / AA / Mignon. Protection class IP54 according to TROTEC product data. According to the operating manual, operating and storage temperature is 0 °C to +40 °C. The membrane being tested must be sufficiently moist to conduct the current pulses, and the ring line must lie directly on the waterproofing; with thicker coverings such as soil or planting, the waterproofing must be exposed at the ring line. Do not use the device in potentially explosive areas, for measurements in liquids or on live parts.

Frequently asked questions

Does the roof have to be wet for the measurement?
Yes. The method needs a moist, electrically conductive waterproofing layer, whether the surface is wet, covered with gravel or planted. If necessary, the waterproofing must be watered additionally.

Can I locate leaks on a gravel or green roof without removing the ballast?
Leak location is possible on flat roofs with ballast such as gravel, planting or paving. The ring line must lie directly on the waterproofing: with poured gravel, the optional gravel tip is recommended; with thicker coverings such as soil or planting, the waterproofing must be exposed where the ring line is laid.

What power supply does the PD200 need?
The generator is connected to 220–240 V, 50–60 Hz mains power with a proper protective earth conductor. The receiver runs on 6 batteries type LR06 (AA), which are included.

What happens in the event of a short circuit?
The red signal lamp lights up, an alarm sounds and the output signal is switched off automatically.
