TROTEC SL3000 – Ultrasonic Leak Detector with Headphones (approx. 40 kHz)
Available to order: typical lead time 5–10 working days. We confirm the exact date after your order or enquiry.
The TROTEC SL3000 is an ultrasonic detector for leak detection and preventive condition monitoring. When water or air escapes under pressure, it creates noise that contains ultrasound inaudible to the human ear. The SL3000 picks up these ultrasonic signals at a receiving frequency of approx. 40 kHz, converts them into audible signals for the included sound-insulated headphones and shows the level numerically and as a bar on the backlit display. It is designed for locating faults and leaks on exposed pressure lines and pipes, fittings, mechanical bearings and electrical components. The rugged metal housing (IP54) runs for approx. 24 hours on two AA batteries and weighs only 0.3 kg.
How it works
A probe plugged into the device picks up the ultrasound. The SL3000 converts it into an audible signal in the headphones and at the same time displays the sound level as a number and an indicator bar. The volume can be adjusted with the arrow keys; a MAX function holds the highest value, the display contrast is variable, and an auto power-off function saves the batteries.
The included airborne sound probe detects airborne ultrasound even at a distance of several metres. Two included attachments improve pinpoint location: the acoustic horn for detection over larger distances and the directional tube (shotgun) with tip for precise location over short distances, for example on weld seams or valve seals. With an optionally available ultrasonic transmitter, unpressurised systems such as window reveals or door frames can also be checked for leaks.
Key benefits
- Makes ultrasound audible — detects ultrasonic signals and converts them into audible signals in the headphones.
- Visual and acoustic indication — sound level shown numerically and as an indicator bar on the backlit display, with MAX function.
- Complete kit — sound-insulated headphones, airborne sound probe, acoustic horn, directional tube with tip and transport case are included.
- Flexible probe system — connection for various ultrasonic probes; the airborne sound probe works at distances of up to several metres.
- Long operating time — approx. 24 hours of battery operation on 2 x AA batteries or rechargeable batteries.
- Robust for field use — metal housing with IP54 protection and membrane keypad, operating temperature -10 °C to +60 °C.
- Extendable — with an optional ultrasonic transmitter, unpressurised systems can also be tested for tightness.
Typical applications
- Leak detection on compressed air lines and on steam, gas and vacuum systems
- Wear monitoring, for example on ball, roller or needle bearings
- Detection of electrical partial discharges at insulation damage
- Function checks of steam traps and valves
- Tightness testing of unpressurised systems (with optional ultrasonic transmitter)
Operating conditions and installation
- Operating temperature: -10 °C to +60 °C
- Storage temperature: -20 °C to +60 °C
- Power supply: 2 x 1.5 V AA batteries or 2 x rechargeable batteries of min. 1.2 V; operating time approx. 24 hours in battery mode
- Protection: device IP54 (complete protection against contact; protection against splashing water from all directions; protected against dust in harmful quantities); probe IP20
- Use: for exposed (not concealed) pressure lines, pipes, fittings, bearings and electrical components. Always set the headphone volume to minimum before a measurement and increase it slowly (operating manual).

Frequently asked questions
Which leaks can the SL3000 detect?
Leaks on exposed pressure lines and pipes, for example compressed air lines and steam, gas and vacuum systems, as well as faults on fittings. Concealed lines are not the intended application.
Can I also test unpressurised systems such as windows or doors?
Yes, with the optionally available ultrasonic transmitter, which is not included in the scope of delivery.
What is the difference between the acoustic horn and the directional tube?
The acoustic horn is suitable for detection over larger distances of several metres; the directional tube allows more precise pinpoint location over shorter distances, and its tip can be used for checking weld seams or valve seals.
Which batteries does the SL3000 use?
Two AA batteries (1.5 V) or two rechargeable batteries of at least 1.2 V, for approx. 24 hours of operation.
Can the SL3000 be used for bearing monitoring?
Yes. The manufacturer names wear checks on ball, roller and needle bearings; optional structure-borne sound probes are available for this.
